Pharmacy is one of many allied health careers available in Australia, but requires extensive study and placement.


The fastest growing jobs in Australia are in healthcare, according to data produced by job site Indeed.






Demand for pharmacists almost trebled, with the number of job ads growing by an astounding 180% in 2019. Likewise, pharmacy assistant jobs grew by almost 170%.


To become a pharmacist in Australia, you must complete a tertiary degree in Pharmacy such as a Bachelor or Master of Pharmacy. You will then need to register with the Pharmacy Board of Australia and complete a one-year internship with a registered pharmacist.


Throughout your internship, you will gain knowledge and practical experience in areas such as:

• Conducting medication reviews
• Providing advice on prescription medications, “over-the-counter” products and
complimentary medicines
• Dispensing medications
• Evidence-based practice
• Legal practice
• Problem solving
• Harm minimisation and health promotion

Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy (Combined Degree)

Griffith's School of Pharmacy has established both research and teaching links with community pharmacists and hospitals in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast and holds joint appointments with external organisations.

Pharmacists work closely with doctors to determine which medications may be best for the patient, and liaise with patients and family members, to determine which medications the patient normally takes, and the correct dosages. Pharmacists work in various areas, including hospitals, community pharmacies, Industrial pharmacies, retail pharmacies, primary care pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies.


The average weekly full-time ordinary earnings as a pharmacist in 2020 are $1,862, giving an annual income of approximately $96,720.


You can get a Temporary Graduate Visa (SC485 : PSW Stream) after completing the pharmacy degree to remain in Australia to gain practical work experience. Graduates of bachelor and masters by coursework degrees can apply for a two-year work visa. Also, graduated from the regional campus of a university such as University of South Australia and Griffith University (GC Campus) will be eligible for a one year extension of 485 visa.
